Alfred Pellan

1906-1988

"Pellan's sketches, paintings and sculptures draw their inspiration from repertories that go far back in time and he connects with trends present in all civilizations. At times, he likes to refer to the bold projections of futurists and allows himself to be carried beyond time and out of this world. Many of his paintings and sculptures mostly probe the unknown, the future. He searches for new substances, resine, plastic materials, metallic colors that are always more dazzling and that can show the attraction of the unimaginable.

Day after day, year after year, Pellan relives and constantly renews for his own advantage and our own, the mystery of ongoing creation, of time repealed or at a standstill, the mystery of eternity.

"Pellan, sa vie, son art, son temps". Germain Lefebvre. Editions Marcel Broquet, 1986

Biography

Alfred Pellan was born in Quebec city on May 16 in 1906. In 1920, he joined l'École des Beaux-Arts de Québec where he studied for five years. He was awarded there the first prizes in advanced studies and obtained medals in painting, drawing, sculpture, sketch, anatomy and marketing.

Top scholar of the province of Quebec, he continued his studies in l'École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1926 to 1930. After completing his scholarship, he stayed in Paris till 1940 working alone while attending the academies Grande Chaumière, Colarossi and Ranson.

He came back to Canada and settled in Montreal teaching from 1943 to 1952 at l'École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal.

Married to Maddalena Polisenc since 1949, he returned to Paris in 1952 with a scholarship of the Royal Society of Canada. His stay lasted until 1955 and gave him the opportunity to present, under the patronage of France and Canada governments, an important exhibition of 181 works at the Musée National d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

Back in Quebec, he renewed with his painting courses at the Centre d'Art de Sainte-Adèle while living in Auteuil (Laval) where he had settled in 1950.

He passed away there on October 31 in 1988.
