PIERRE GAUVREAU

Pierre Gauvreau was born in Montreal on August 23rd 1922. As early as 1941, he exhibits his oil paintings and drawings influenced by fauvisme. In 1944, he realizes his first non-figurative paintings. In 1948, Pierre Gauvreau is an active participant to the publication of the manifest titled “Refus Global” (global refusal) and to the ensuing controversy. He is involved until 1962 in all the “avant-garde” confrontation and exposes his artworks in Europe and United States. After a long pause spent reflecting, he gathers his brushes and starts creating paintings that are free, solid and generous and achieves the recognition that was foretold in his early days by Borduas as he wrote in his book “Indiscrétions”: “Pierre the born painter. The most serene revolutionary painting. Daybreak at sunset. In the cool shadow, I see the quiet dance of the familiar ghosts under a sky on fire. It is the restful, improbable oasis. An unexpected new world order is emerging from the sour and aged humanity that surrounds us.” |
